Hi Reader,
In this week’s episode, my guest Kelly Tolliday shared a powerful strategy to help navigate life's challenges - everything from just having a rough day to how you handle grief. She talked about the importance of having three essential elements in place: your practices, your mentors and teachers, and your community. These pillars form a support system that can help you stay grounded, resilient, and focused, no matter what life throws your way.
1. Practices: These are the daily routines and habits that keep you centered and help you show up as your best self. For Kelly, practices like breathwork, journaling, and spending time in nature are crucial for maintaining her mental and emotional well-being. The key is to find what works for you—whether it’s meditation, prayer, exercise, or creative expression—and be able to call on these practices when you need them.
2. Mentors and Teacher: We all need guidance sometimes, and that’s where mentors come in. Whether it’s a coach, therapist, or a wise friend, having someone who can offer objective advice and help you see things from a different perspective is invaluable. Think about who you turn to when you need advice—are they the right person for the challenges you’re facing? If not, it might be time to seek out someone new who aligns with where you’re headed.
3. Community: Finally, community. We’re not meant to go through life alone. Your community might be your family, your friends, or a group of people who share your passions and goals. Having a community of like-minded individuals provides encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging. Take a look at your circle—are you surrounded by people who support your growth? Your relationships are critical to how you face and walk through adversity.
3 Steps to Audit and Build Your Own Support System
- List Your Current Practices: Write down the habits and routines you currently rely on. Are they serving you in the way described above? If not, what practices could you introduce to better support your goals? Choose one new practice to try this week.
- Identify Your Mentors & Teachers: Think about the people who offer you guidance. Do you have a mentor or coach? If not, consider reaching out to someone who can provide professional or personal support. It could be as simple as scheduling a consultation or reconnecting with a past mentor.
- Assess Your Community: Think about the people you spend the most time with. Do they encourage your growth? If you’re feeling a little disconnected, try joining a new group or reconnecting with a community that inspires you.
Once you've completed your audit, open a note in your phone and list out the 3 components of your support system. Next time life throws something tough to handle your way, open your note and access what you need in the moment. Then take note of how that helped and what you'd do differently next time. Kelly shared that it's not always 33% of each one that gets you through - sometimes it may be 100% practices or 100% Community. The key is knowing what's in your arsenal so you can access it quickly and gain control.
By auditing and intentionally building your practices, mentors, and community, you can create a robust support system that empowers you to thrive in every aspect of your life!
